TempElert Spectrum FAQs
Q: Where do I get
TempElert Spectrum 64 bit
version?
A: Both 32 and 64 bit versions
come on the CD ROM and you can choose which to install. For
downloads, we offer links to both versions when we send your
serial number key.
Q: Can I run more than
one TempElert Spectrum on a PC, say for example if I have two
locations to monitor?
A: No, and there is no need.
TempElert Spectrum will monitor multiple devices, multiple
probes, across multiple networks. For small scale monitoring
needs see TempElert Standard
and TempElert USB.
Q:
Can I run a temperature sensing
device on a wireless (WiFi) network instead of a wired network?
A: Yes, we offer an adapter
for that, see the purchase page. Bear
in mind however that WiFi networks aren't as reliable as a
permanent wired Ethernet connection. If your monitoring
requirement is truly of a mission critical nature, we recommend
a wired connection.
Q:
I don't know how to program the
network device for a fixed IP address. How do I do this?
A: The network enabled
temperature and environmental monitors that we sell require a
one-time programming to match your network settings. You'll need
to get the following information from your network
administrator.
An available fixed IP
address, such as 192.168.0.155
The gateway address of your
LAN/WAN, such as 192.168.0.1
The netmask, typically
255.255.255.0
You'll need to connect a
serial port from your PC to your device to program it. Many
modern PC's don't have a serial port, in which case you'll need
a USB to serial converter cable, typically about $30-$50. Follow
the instructions in the device manual on how to do this.
Alternately, we offer a programming service to program the
devices for "plug and play" operation prior to shipping them to
you. See the purchase page
for this option.
Once programmed, the devices
maintain the settings in non-volatile memory, even if powered
off.

Q: Can I run more than
one TempElert Standard on a PC, say for example if I have two
locations to monitor?
A: Yes, but it is
required that you install the program into a separate folder a
second time. The limit is two installs per PC to monitor two
network enabled devices such as the E4 or U16. For monitoring
multiple locations please use TempElert Spectrum which is
designed for the purpose.
Q:
Do I have to run the network
enabled sensing device on a fixed IP address?
A: Yes, this is due to the
mission critical nature of the system. A fixed IP address means
that changing network conditions won't cause failure.
Q: Are the email
messages configurable to say what I want?
A: Yes, the email setup screen
allows you to embed any text message you wish, the data from the
sensor with an over/under condition will automatically be
inserted for you along with your custom message.
Q: I want to operate
this program at my remote location that only has dial-up
internet access, will it work with that?
A: Yes, if you set your PC for
"dialup on demand", TempElert will activate that feature, and
initiate a telephone call to your ISP for you, and will send the
message when a connection is established.
Q: I want to operate a
network sensing device (E4 or U16) at my remote location that
has DSL/Cable modem internet access, will it work with that?
A: Yes, if you set your router
to pass through port 80 (HTTP) requests to the fixed IP address
that the device is located at, you can query the device this way
from TempElert. Since many DSL/Cable modem services rotate IP
addresses regularly, you'll need something to keep track of the
service IP address. Many routers support somethign called
"Dynamic DNS" which is a tracking service that gives the router
(and the attached device if it is set for port 80 pass through)
a domain name.
Examples of these services
are:
ZoneEdit
Dynamic DNS
For example, if you chose to
sign up your router at DynDns.com you'd get a domain name (you
can choose) like mydevice.dyndns.org which you would
substitute for the IP address in the TempElert program where it
asks for the device location. It will be automatic after that,
even if the router/modem gets reset.

TempElert USB Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can I run more than
one TempElert USB on a PC is I have multiple USB ports
available?
A: No, the device does
not have multichannel capability. If you need multichannel
monitoring, use TempElert
Standard or Spectrum
with one of our network enabled devices.
Q: Can I extend the
distance away from the PC that the USB sensor operates at?
A: Yes, we offer USB extension
cables with clips to do the job up to about 30 feet, as well as
a CAT5/Cat6 Ethernet extender to get you 150 to 300 feet
extension, depending on cable quality. See the
purchase page
for details.
Q: Can the sensor
operate submerged?
A: No, it is for free air
temperature only but, both
TempElert Standard or
Spectrum support
submergible probes.
Q: Do you have Mac or
Linux Versions available?
A: Not at this time.
Q: Are the email
messages configurable to say what I want?
A: Yes, the email setup screen
allows you to embed any text message you wish, the data from the
sensor with an over/under condition will automatically be
inserted for you along with your custom message.
Q: I don't have an
email server at the location where I wish to monitor, how do I
get around that?
A: There is a small built in
SMTP email server in the TempElert USB program which you can
enable. As long as your internet service will pass SMTP on port
25 it will work for you. You can also use most any free email
service such as AOL, Google Gmail, and Yahoo Mail to send alerts
to your email, pager, or cellphone. Instructions are provided to
help you.
Q: I want to operate
this program at my remote location that only has dial-up
internet access, will it work with that?
A: Yes, if you set your PC for
"dialup on demand", TempElert USB will activate that feature,
and initiate a telephone call to your ISP for you, and will send
the message when a connection is established.
Q: Do you have a list
of how to send messages to my mobile phone?
A: Yes, in our
TempElert USB Operation Manual
(PDF1.5MB)
in Appendix B we have a large up to date list of
mobile providers and the messaging addresses they use.
